This role will shape and execute a comprehensive communications strategy to strengthen the brand, broaden the reach, ensuring the work resonates with communities, supporters and partners across Alaska. Your day to day:
Strategic Communications and Brand Leadership: This role will lead the development and execution of a strategic communications and brand plan that supports the organization’s mission, drives donor engagement, strengthens advocacy efforts, and increases the visibility of programs and services. As the senior advisor on messaging and brand strategy, you’ll guide the organization’s voice and positioning, ensuring clarity, consistency, and impact across all communications. In this role, you’ll be responsible for maintaining alignment with voice, tone, and visual identity across platforms—while crafting compelling content and campaigns that resonate with diverse audiences and reflect the heart of the mission.
Executive and Media Relations: As the primary point of contact for media and public relations, you will be representing the organization in high-profile communications and leading the response during times of crisis. A key part of the role will be proactively building relationships with journalists, media outlets, and strategic partners to generate meaningful earned media opportunities that elevate our work. You'll also support executive visibility by developing speeches, op-eds, talking points, and media statements for the Executive Director and Board—ensuring the organizational voice is clear, confident, and aligned with the organization’s mission and message.
Content Strategy and Storytelling: Leading the creation and curation of meaningful, mission-driven content, you will oversee creative projects from concept to completion. In this role, you’ll also manage photography, video production, graphic design and editorial planning, ensuring high quality, cohesive messaging across all channels. With the development team, you’ll create emotionally compelling and data-driven content supporting fundraising efforts and deepening donor engagement.
Digital Engagement and Marketing: This role will maximize online presence by leading digital strategy and marketing, overseeing website management, email marketing, SEO, and social media. By monitoring analytics and key performance indicators across all platforms, this role will measure effectiveness, optimize campaigns, and inform strategic decisions. Driving the content calendar, timely and relevant communications for campaigns, events, and key initiatives will be ensured.
Internal Communications & Organizational Culture: Leading internal communication efforts, this role will keep staff, board, and volunteers well informed, engaged and aligned with organizational goals. It will support organizational change and cross-department collaboration by developing clear tools and messaging. Additionally in this role you will build a positive, mission-driven culture, serving as a trusted advisor and coach, guiding staff and leadership on best practices for effective communication.
Leadership & Organizational Management: This position is a vital member of the Management Team. Overseeing staff, consultants, and vendors, it will contribute to organizational planning, strategic direction and a healthy workplace culture. Thoughtful allocation of resources by this role will maximize impact, along with cross-departmental collaboration to drive alignment and effectiveness organization-wide.
Ideally you have:
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field.
- Minimum 3-5 years of progressive experience in strategic communications, public relations, or marketing, including at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- Experience in nonprofit, mission-driven, or public sector organizations
- Valid Alaska driver’s license, clean driving record, and current auto insurance.
- Ability to pass state and federal background checks.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and visual communication skills across diverse platforms and audiences.
- Proven track record of leading successful communication campaigns that drive engagement and impact.
- Deep understanding of media relations, content marketing, brand management, and digital engagement.
- Proficiency with communications tools and platforms (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Google Analytics, Mailchimp, Canva, social media schedulers).
- Strong leadership, team management, and project management skills.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to align communications with organizational goals and navigate complex messaging challenges.
