This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.
DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility
HOURS OF WORK: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
LOCATION: 3000 Arctic Boulevard
Remote work schedule opportunities (telecommuting) may be considered after successful completion of probation, at the discretion of management and with the approval of the department head. Not all positions are eligible for remote work (telecommuting) per P&P 40-40.
Example of Duties
Under supervision, this position will perform engineering duties including, but not limited to, report writing, preparing civil engineering related design packages that include construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates for complex utility projects. Inspect construction activity to ensure compliance with contract documents. Perform and oversee quality control reviews of designs prepared by others, including electrical, mechanical, and architectural designs. Assist in the procuring and administering professional services and construction contracts. Participate in the preparation of project schedules and budgets. At times workloads require the position accomplish several projects concurrently. The position is expected to prepare plans within a computer aided design environment. Perform other required duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and seven (7) years of engineering, planning or drafting experience.
OR
Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Planning, Architectural & Engineering Technology, or a closely related discipline, and five (5) years of engineering, planning or drafting experience.
OR
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Planning, Architectural & Engineering Technology, or a closely related discipline, and three (3) years of engineering, planning or drafting experience.
OR
Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Planning, Architectural & Engineering Technology, or a closely related discipline, and one (1) year of engineering, planning or drafting experience.
Must possess and/or obtain:
- Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.
- Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
Must possess the ability to:
- Participate in major emergencies or disasters as outlined in AWWU’s disaster plan matrix, which defines each employee’s potential duties and responsibilities. This may include 12-hour work shifts, which may continue for 72 hours or more starting at any time an event might occur, 7 days a week, 24 hours per day.
Preference:
- Engineer In Training (EIT) certification by passing National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Professional Engineering License from the Alaska Board of Architects, Engineers, Land Surveyors.
