This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.

HOURS OF WORK: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm
LOCATION: 825 L Street

 

Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.

 

Remote work schedule opportunities (telecommuting) may be considered after successful completion of probation, at the discretion of management and with the approval of the department head. Not all positions are eligible for remote work (telecommuting) per P&P 40-40.

Example of Duties

Under direct supervision, reviews permit applications, approves permits. and inspects public facilities including food establishments, hotels/motels, school food service, Habilitative Care and Correctional Community residential establishments, Assisted Living Facilities, cosmetology establishments. public and commercial swimming pools and spas, marijuana retail stores, and assures compliance with AMC Title 15 and 16; applies sanitation standards; may participate and assist, with supervision, in enforcement action. Responds to complaints about possible food borne illness; responds to complaints regarding food establishments, pools and spas, housing complaints, noise, smoking in public places, hotel/motel mold, and pesticide applications. Provides technical assistance and public health education to permit holders, their employees and to the public. Updates Air Quality Index spreadsheet, website, and phone message. Perform other related duties as assigned.

The Anchorage Health Department (AHD) engages in the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (AHD) emergency responses and the federal Incident Command System (ICS). This includes training exercises as part of the AHD's Crisis Health Action Team (CHAT) and municipal Emergency Operations Center (EOC). In the case of a natural or manmade disaster, AHD employees may be called to engage in emergency operations responses and recovery.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

 

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and four (4) years of experience in environmental science, epidemiology, investigation of food borne illness, public health sanitation inspections, or a related field.


OR

Associate’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a related discipline, and two (2) years of experience in environmental science, epidemiology, investigation of food borne illness, public health sanitation inspections, or a related field.

OR

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a related discipline, and experience in environmental science, epidemiology, investigation of food borne illness, public health sanitation inspections or a related field.

 

Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.

 

Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License and satisfactory Driving Record at time of hire.



Must possess the following certifications within six (6) months of hire:
 
  • Municipality of Anchorage Certification as a Designated Peace Officer
  • Pool/Spa Operator Certification or Aquatic Facility Operator Certification
  • Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Safety Inspection Officer Certification
Preferences
 
  • Certified Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) 
  • Registered Sanitarian (RS) through the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) or a recognized equivalent.
