Paola Pivi: Lies, Lies, Lies on view at Anchorage Museum Dec. 3, 2021 through Sept. 4, 2022

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska-based Italian artist Paola Pivi sees lies everywhere. Their prevalence in politics and the media, and the glut of information individuals engage with daily, she says, have made her keenly aware how lies are powerfully used as tools of aggression and manipulation. The confusion created by the spread of lies through mass communication is at the core of Pivi’s Lies, Lies, Lies, an immersive, multimedia installation opening at the Anchorage Museum Dec. 3, 2021.

Composed of dozens of television screens and a sound system and installed on the museum’s fourth floor, Lies, Lies, Lies invites visitors to enter a structure made of dozens of television screens on all sides, above and below. More than 40,000 different images from around the world appear randomly every 3 seconds, one on each screen, while a sound system plays a human voice reciting numerous “lies.” The “lies” range from obvious and engaging to dubious and obscure, and include historically and politically relevant lies.

The effect of Paola Pivi’s Lies, Lies, Lies symbolizes the seemingly endless amount of content many of us consume every day through screens and the confusion created by the spread of lies through mass communication.

Anchorage Museum visitors may be familiar with Pivi’s work from her series of brightly colored, feather-covered polar bears on view in the museum’s Art of the North galleries. Her complex and diverse body of work is intentionally open-ended and multi-layered, inviting viewers to extract their own meanings and ways of engaging.

Lies, Lies, Lies is presented with support from the Italian Council (9th Edition, 2020) program to promote Italian contemporary art in the world by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.
