Position Title: BUILDING CUSTODIAN (BC)
Ministry Purpose: The BC is responsible for the weekly cleaning and securing of the physical plant and building related equipment.
Qualifications: The BC has excellent communicating, coordinating, and cleaning skills and is able to receive direction, multi-task, and work as part of a team. This person possesses basic maintenance skills. The BC must be able to lift and move 40lbs as well as stand, kneel, squat, bend, or stretch for extended periods. The BC must have a valid State of Alaska driver’s license and be able to pass a criminal background check.
Serving Relationships: The BC serves under the direction and supervision of the LEAD PASTOR who sets the priorities in close collaboration with the program and office staff members, as well as in consultation with other building users. The BC welcomes, helps, and serves staff, members, and guests of First UMC.
Primary Areas of Service: Service responsibilities will be in three general areas: Cleaning, Maintenance, & Security:
Cleaning: The BC is responsible for the cleaning of the interior of the physical plant, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, sanitizing, polishing surfaces, and emptying garbage and recycling receptacles as scheduled or as needed. The BC is responsible for ordering and restocking bathroom paper products and cleaning supplies, as well as maintaining the Material Safety Data Sheets for cleaning supplies.
Maintenance: The BC is responsible for basic maintenance such as replacing burned out light bulbs, replacing clock batteries, changing clocks to reflect daylight savings time, as well as returning furniture to its proper location throughout the building. The BC communicates with the LEAD PASTOR with regards to larger repairs or maintenance issues including equipment repairs.
Security: The BC is responsible for making sure the building is locked up upon leaving the facility. The BC will ensure all doors and windows are securely closed and locked, and that all lights and equipment have been powered down prior to exiting the building.
Expectations: The BC is a part time, hourly position, approved for up to 15 hours of work per week. Any overtime or hours over 15 hours in a workweek must be pre-approved in writing by the LEAD PASTOR. The BC is expected to model behavior that is congruent with the profession of being a disciple of Jesus Christ. This person will be kind and courteous when dealing with all persons who use the facilities.
