Open to the public, Plumbers and Pipefitters (Local 367) members, and any current Municipal Employees.

 

This position is represented by the Plumbers & Steamfitters, Local 367, and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

 

DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility

HOURS OF WORK: Alternate Treatment Schedule

LOCATION: 2300 Hutson Drive - Asplund Wastewater Treatment Facility

 

To be considered for employment, applicants must be legally authorized to work and accept employment in the United States. The Municipality of Anchorage is not able to provide any type of sponsorship, including Student Visas and Employment Visas, under any circumstances.

 

Applicants shall be referred and considered for this position in the order as follows per the Collective Bargaining Agreement:

  • Internal applicants currently working under the Plumbers & Steamfitters (Local 367) Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Local union dispatched applicants
  • External applicants and other current Municipal employees not covered under this agreement

 

Example of Duties

Perform work in the operation, preventive maintenance and minor maintenance of water and/or wastewater treatment plant, including well producton and water distribution systesm. Work is assigned, performed, supervised, and reviewed based on applicable State of Alaska Operator Certification level and the role of the individual. The required skill and supervision is dependent on the applicable State of Alaska Operator Certification level of the person. Employees are assigned general duties in the broad area of treatment plant systems operations, well production, and water distribution systems. Incumbents work independently with less direct supervision as proficiency level increases. Employees work varying shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays to meet the water and/or wastewater treatent needs of the domestic, commercial, and industrial sectors of the Municipality of Anchorage. 

Treatment Plant Operators III and IV are lead positions and assist in the training of other operators, and may be assigned as plant-in-charge crew leader with duties that include assigning, controlling, and checking work for accuracy and conformity with procedures and regulations.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Participate in major emergencies or disasters as outlined in AWWU’s disaster plan matrix, which defines each employee’s potential duties and responsibilities. This may include 12-hour work shifts, which may continue for 72 hours or more starting at any time an event might occur, 7 days a week, 24 hours per day.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Treatment Plant Operator I - Level 1
 

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
 
State of Alaska Provisional Wastewater Treatment certification at time of application.
 
State of Alaska Wastewater Treatment Operator Level I certification within one (1) year of hire.
 
A valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with satisfactory driving record and no Air Brake restriction at time of hire. Applicants with a Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.
 
Satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.
 
OR
 
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
 
State of Alaska Wastewater Treatment Operator Level I certification at the time of application.
 
A valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with satisfactory driving record and no Air Brake restriction at time of hire. Applicants with a Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.
 
Satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.
 

Treatment Plant Operator II - Level 2
 
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
 
State of Alaska Wastewater Treatment Operator Level II certification at the time of application.
 
A valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with satisfactory driving record and no Air Brake restriction at time of hire. Applicants with a Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.
 
Satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.
 
Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.


Treatment Plant Operator III - Level 3
 
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
 
State of Alaska Wastewater Treatment Operator Level III certification at the time of application.
 
A valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with satisfactory driving record and no Air Brake restriction at time of hire. Applicants with a Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.
 
American Red Cross First Aid certification or equivalent, American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification or equivalent, and American Red Cross or American Heart Organization Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification or equivalent within six (6) months of hire.
 
Satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.


Treatment Plant Operator IV - Level 4
 
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
 
State of Alaska Wastewater Treatment Operator Level IV certification at the time of application.
 
A valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with satisfactory driving record and no Air Brake restriction at time of hire. Applicants with a Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.
 
American Red Cross First Aid certification or equivalent, American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification or equivalent, and American Red Cross or American Heart Organization Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification or equivalent within six (6) months of hire.

Must possess and/or obtain:
 
Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.
 
The ability to operate the applicable system equipment, motor vehicles, forklift, skid loader, lawn mower, snow blower, small electric hand tools, dump trucks, and tanker trucks.
 
The proficiency with PC technology and have advanced working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications, such as Word and Excel.
 
The ability to learn MAXIMO, WORK TECH Time, WIMS, and AWWU's SCADA system.
