Event Description:

About four years ago, four private equity funds were established, funded 50:50 by private investors and U.S. Federal "Stimulus" money channeled through the Municipality of Anchorage's 49th State Angel Fund. Get a snapshot of some of the companies funded, success to date, and their prospects and challenges. Consider how Chamber businesses may grow with them. Hear how some of the funds may be able to help entrepreneurs and companies ready to scale.

Carol Howarth, co-Founder of the 49th Fund.
Born and raised in Anchorage, Carol returned to Alaska in late 1999, working with early-stage companies, all of which struggled to find follow-on financing in Alaska. Carol began exploring the possibility of bringing an established fund to Alaska in 2008. But it was only with the US Treasury allocation of “Stimulus Funds” to the Municipality of Anchorage, that Carol and partner Jamie Kenworthy decided to establish their own fund. That brought both Outside and Alaska investors to the table to establish the 49th Fund in 2014. The 49th Fund considers equity or convertible debt investments in companies poised for growth, needing capital, and with a clear benefit to Anchorage and Alaska. While Carol has a passion for manufacturing and tech, she really likes everything outdoors. She is a strong believer in all those Alaskan businesses developing incredibly cool stuff for gearheads.

Ky Holland, co-founder, Alyeska Venture Management and its Alaska Accelerator Fund, and a Launch Alaska board member.
The Accelerator Fund was the first to deploy its capital in Anchorage businesses -- six fascinating early stage start-ups. As a director, mentor and investor, Ky wears his many hats--pulling from his experience as a professor of business administration, a seed fund manager, and an engineer. He also keeps the Alaska startup community informed through the Alaska Startup Digest and championing 1-Million Cups program in Anchorage.

Ky lives in Anchorage, Alaska and has a variety of interests in education, business, industrial manufacturing, winter recreation and coffee.
